Pregnancy Cravings

We’re sure you’ve heard some crazy craving stories. Women’s cravings can range from something as simple as a piece of chocolate to an intense desire to get her hands on a slice of cheesecake topped with olives. Why do these cravings happen? Well, that’s up for debate.

Experts are split on the matter. Some believe that cravings are due to biological necessity—if you’re craving milk, it probably means that your body needs calcium. But, this theory hasn’t been scientifically proven. However, all experts agree that you should listen to your body and try to feed it what it wants... within reason, of course.

Here are some tips for answering your cravings:

  • If you’re hungry, you should eat.
  • If you constantly feel ravenous, make sure you are eating three full healthy meals each day, accompanied by balanced snacks.
  • When you’ve got a craving for junk food, it’s okay to indulge sometimes. If your junk food cravings happen very frequently, try some healthier substitutions.
    • Dreaming of ice cream? Alternate with sherbet, frozen yogurt or popsicles every once in awhile. Or blend a frozen banana with a splash of milk, and a sprinkle of nutmeg and cinnamon to ice cream consistency.
    • Gotta have that salty crunch? Try baked chips, pretzels or microwave popcorn with light butter.
    • Need chocolate? Many women feel the urge. Indulge in just a few squares, or substitute a chocolate bar with a tasty glass of chocolate milk. It’s delicious and it’s a great source of calcium and vitamin D.
    • Sweet on cake? Instead of pastries, consider an English muffin, a bagel, or toast with sweet jam.

PICA

Some pregnant women experience an intense craving for non-food materials such as dirt, ice, laundry starch or clay. This condition, called pica, affects about 8% of pregnant women. Eating some of these items could be harmful to your baby due to high toxin levels. What you can do: Consult your doctor if you have these urges.
